XP To install on 'royalty free OEM' machines (HP, DELL, etc.) you can get the vendor's oembios files from, or backed up from the current installation. You then need to use the SLP (system locked preinstallation) key that corresponds to the installation media's product ID. These used to be archived on the My Digital Life forums, but were. I'm not sure if the particular vendor key is required, or if will work.
If you still have the original installation from the OEM, you can extract the SLP key they used for installation from the registry using a tool like. (Most antivirus seems to complain about produkey, but I've never had issues with it.) can help you create the ISO and be very useful for testing in a VM, but it's quite a bit more difficult to test the SLP activation with the VM. Windows 8/8.1 After a fresh install, the system does not auto activate and when one tries to enter the correct OEM Product Key (extracted from BIOS), it is refused.
The trick is to first remove the current Product Key with slmgr /upk, then the OEM key can be entered and activation works flawlessly. This idea comes from, which also describes how to get the OEM key using RW Everything (including video tutorial!). Really this has saved me several hours, maybe days of experimenting. If you find it helpful, please upvote that answer instead of this one.
I also created a small PowerShell script to accomplish all the steps in a fully automated manner, which is great for mass OS deployments (e.g. Using the amazing ): $key=(Get-WmiObject -Class SoftwareLicensingService).OA3xOriginalProductKey iex 'cscript /b C: windows system32 slmgr.vbs /upk' iex 'cscript /b C: windows system32 slmgr.vbs /ipk $key' iex 'cscript /b C: windows system32 slmgr.vbs /ato' Successfully (re)installed and activated 64 Win 8.1 Pro x64 OEM laptops with this. Windows 7 I found to be invaluable. If you have a computer that has an Windows 7 OEM license embedded in the BIOS SLIC area, and then reinstall a generic image, it will claim to be not genuine. To verify, run this command from a cmd prompt with administrator privs: slmgr.vbs /dlv It will say 'License Status: Notification', and 'Notification Reason: 0xC004F063'. To fix that, find the proper OEM key file, and then run: slmgr.vbs /ilc VENDOR.xrm-ms where VENDOR is the name of your computer vendor.
Now run slmgr.vbs /dlv again, and it should say 'License Status: Licensed'. To check your BIOS SLIC area, you can use the and look in the 'OEM Activation 2.0 Data' section.
Many people aren’t aware that a pre-built computer from a manufacturer like Dell or HP actually has two Windows product keys present, and the key on the Windows COA sticker isn’t actually in use. What your computer is shipped and installed with is a generic OEM product key that is the same on every computer that comes from the same manufacturer with that edition of Windows. You can test this yourself by using a, the license it displays will not be the same as what’s on the attached sticker. Unfortunately if you perform a you cannot ordinarily use this generic key and will instead have to use the one from the COA sticker.
To prevent pirates easily using the key, measures are in place to make sure it only works on computers built by the manufacturer. Firstly, each computer has data added to the BIOS identifying the manufacturer.
Secondly, a security certificate is installed into Windows which checks that identity in the BIOS and accepts the generic key. If the BIOS, certificate and key all match up, Windows will activate without the need for the internet or a phone. Many computers that came with Windows Vista and 7 will be getting old and if you still have the original install that came on the computer, you may be thinking about a reinstall as all Windows installs degrade and slow down over time. While you can use the product key from the sticker attached to your computer, after all this time many of those stickers will now be hard to read or the characters have rubbed off completely making the key unreadable.
Thankfully there are ways to backup the OEM license key and certificate from a current Windows install and then transfer them onto a completely clean installation. Activation Backup and Restore (ABR) ABR was originally designed to work on Vista only but support for Windows 7 was added in a later beta version. What it does is quite simple, extract and backup the currently installed OEM certificate and product key to a folder. You copy the folder onto a new system and the tool will reinstall the certificate and key.
As the valid OEM data is still in the BIOS the computer will reactivate automatically. Backup your Vista or Windows 7 OEM license using ABR: 1. And run the executable which will extract the files to the location of your choice. Inside the extracted ABRbeta folder, run activationbackup.exe (administrator privileges are required).
The program will find and create a backup of the certificate and a text file with the product key in the same folder. Copy the ABRbeta folder to a USB flash drive or another hard drive so you can access it after a new Windows install. Restore your Vista or Windows 7 OEM license onto a new install: It is important to note that you MUST install the same edition of Windows that is currently on your computer. If your computer has Windows 7 Home Premium, you must reinstall Windows 7 Home Premium or the reactivation will fail.
There she goes sixpence none the richer. You can and reinstall Windows 7 64-bit when your original install was Windows 7 32-bit. The security certificate in Windows is not tied to a specific edition but the product key is.
Perform a clean reinstall of Windows 7 or Vista (the same edition that your computer shipped with). During Windows installation do not enter a product key and choose to skip it. Locate the ABRbeta folder on your system and run the activationrestore.exe. If you receive a message on Windows 7 that the tokens.dat file is not found and Windows may be already activated, just press y to continue.
The certificate and product key will be automatically installed, if you look in System Properties (right click Computer Properties) the Windows activation status should say “Windows is activated”. Advanced Tokens Manager While the Activation Backup and Restore tool above allows you to transfer your OEM license from one install to another on the same computer, Advanced Tokens Manager will actually allow you to transfer standard Windows licenses that have been activated by phone or online as well, although certain conditions apply in those cases. It can also backup and restore Windows 8 and Office 2010/2013 licenses.
Backup your Vista or Windows 7 OEM license using Advanced Tokens Manager: 1. And extract the zip to a folder of your choice, straight to flash drive or another hard drive would be best. Run the program and click the Activation Backup button, administrator privileges are required. Read the sizable warning popup and then click Yes to allow the backup to begin.
After a few seconds the process will be complete and a folder called “Windows Activation Backup” is now at the location of the executable. Inside is a tokens.dat file which contains the security certificate and an INI file with the product key, Windows version and CRC checksum. Restore your Vista or Windows 7 OEM license using Advanced Tokens Manager: 1. Or 7 with the same edition that was previously installed (switching between 32-bit and 64-bit is permitted). Skip the enter product key screen during the install process. Run Advanced Tokens Manager and click the Activation Restore button.
Windows 7 Activation Backup
Note the warning popup says the process could take up to 5 minutes and all network connections will be interrupted during this time. When it’s complete System Properties will automatically be opened where you can check the activation status. Advanced Tokens Manager requires.NET Framework v4. Raymond.cc’s Windows 7 OEM License Installer This tool is something we made a few years back after constantly being asked to reinstall Windows 7 machines and the COA sticker attached to the computer was nearly always unreadable. The only other option besides using the OEM license would be to pay for a new copy of Windows 7. This program does not work on Vista but will automatically install the correct manufacturer OEM security certificate and product key to your Windows 7 computer. The useful thing about the Windows 7 OEM License Installer program is it does not need to make a backup first so if your current Windows install is unbootable or has been already erased, this tool will work where the two above will not.
Currently Windows 7 machines from Acer, Packard Bell, eMachines, Advent, Asus, Dell, Fujitsu, Gigabyte, HP, Compaq, Lenovo, IBM, Medion, MSI, Samsung, Sony and Toshiba are supported. Install Windows 7 OEM license: 1. Because this program doesn’t rely on backups, you can straight away install the same edition of Windows 7 that was installed on your computer by the manufacturer (32-bit 64-bit swapping is permitted). 2., run the program and click the “Install Cert & Key” button. Then simply follow the prompts to install the correct security certificate and product key for your computer and version of Windows. Note the program will only work if your computer has been manufactured from one of the companies listed above, if not it will fail to work and your install will not be activated. The Activation Status button will tell you the current Windows activation state, BIOS Info will run a separate included tool so you can analyze the system BIOS to see what manufacturer data is present.
Windows 7 OEM License Installer will reactivate your OEM copy of Windows 7 Home basic, Home Premium, Professional and Ultimate. Of course we welcome any feedback, bug reports or suggestions regarding the Windows 7 OEM License Installer. There is now a 4th option!
Patch Cleaner. I created this 100% free software.
It cleans the windows installer directory with one easy click. If you don’t trust it, you can use the move action to move the orphaned files to another folder until you are satisfied it hasn’t done anything wrong.
Windows Installer Directory When applications are installed and updated on the Windows Operating System a hidden directory 'c: Windows Installer' is used to store the installer (.msi) files and the patch (.msp) files. Generally these files are important as during updating, patching or uninstalling software it will use the.msi/.msp files. If you blanketly delete all the files in this folder, you will find yourself needing to rebuild windows. Over time as your computer is patched and patched again, these installer files become outdated and orphaned. They are no longer required, but they can take up many gigabytes of data. PatchCleaner PatchCleaner identifies. Media Center creates backup files every time you schedule a new show or make modifications to the guide listings, you just need to find them.
To get to the files you will need to enable the viewing of hidden folders, then open Windows Explorer and navigate to C: ProgramData Microsoft eHome (by default). Inside you will find a folder, or series of folders, for each tuner you have installed marked “mcepgX-X-X”. Inside each of these folders you will find a backup folder containing backup files for listings, recordings, and subscriptions.

Disclaimer: I sincerely believe this guide to be on the legitimate side and I in no way support the use of this guide for purposes other than activating Vista on your Viste preinstalled Lenovo laptop! I recently bought a T60 and although Ive been reading these wonderfull forums/community for 6 months now I never needed to post as its a habit of mine to not post in forums unless I really cant solve something or I have a suggestion/solution to something. This time its the latter and this will be my first post!
The first thing I did when I bought my T60 was to clean install Vista. I suppose everyone knows the benefits of this but what not many people know is that you cant automatically activate Vista using the product key which is located in the sticker under your laptop. You must go through the telephone activation route which is sometimes really boring or even worse, unusable.
I also didnt want to use any of my spare MSDNAA licences because I payed for this laptops Vista licence and I might as well make it work! So I started digging on how I can activate my T60 the same way Lenovo activates them during the factory restore.
Ive found out that Lenovo (and other OEMs) use a different product key, not the one you see in the sticker, which is hidden in the restore partition (or the discs you made yourself). This product key in combination with a license file that Microsoft has given to each OEM can activate windows without the need of online or telephone activation. Ofcourse for the product key/license file to work your BIOS must be compatible (aka support SLIC - Software Licensing Description Table) so that you cant ilegally use this technique on every pc you own (doh!). Here are the steps for a successful offline activation: 1. While you are using your factory preinstalled Vista find out your REAL OEM product key.
You can use many utilities for this, like TweakVI but the easiest one is the. Print or write your product key. Clean install Vista using either a retail DVD or with the Windows Anytime Upgrade DVD that might have been included in your Lenovo purchase. They are exactly the same media so no need to go the ware.ahmm you know. way! When asked for your product key during installation enter the product you found in step 1 and NOT the product key which is written on the sticker under your laptop.
Find the Lenovo OEM licence file. It is found in your recovery media. For example if you wrote 2 DVDs with the R&R4 program the licence file is located in the data DVD (big one) into an imz archive (actually an encrypted zip archive) named 0ADPE07.IMZ Inside that archive you must find SWWORK C WINDOWS SYSTEM32 OEM lenovo.oemcert.100036.xrm-ms The problem with all the archives in the recovery DVD is that they are encrypted! I am currently brute forcing them but it will take days to find the correct password.
So to save us some trouble we can find it on the net by searching Google for lenovo.oemcert.100036.xrm-ms. Download this file and place it somewhere (for easy install put it C: ) 4.
Now we can oem/offline activate Vista by issuing the following well documented and supported by Microsoft commands. Click to expand. The key retrieved from this method is only usable on your lenovo laptop because the licence certificate (the lenovo.oemcert.100036.xrm-ms file) was created to match certain data that your BIOS holds in it's SLIC table. I really don't think it's possible to use into another brand's laptop. On the other hand you could use your second key (the one found in the sticker) to activate over the phone another computer (e.g your Vaio) but this will probably violate the EULA as you can only have one installed copy of Windows with every retail or oem licence you purchase.
